Awards and recognition

It’s been a month since I was recognized by Asian Hustle Network (AHN) as one of the 2023 Top 50 Unsung Heroes. It still feels so surreal. I contemplated how to write this post, so it’s not just another “I am thrilled to announce” post.
Do I feel like a hero? I’ve been pondering ever since I received the notification that I’ve been recognized. Growing up I was taught it’s my responsibility to do good work — but it is tacky and insensitive to share and celebrate my own achievement.
When I received that notification, I felt… “shy” that I was being celebrated, especially among the most talented bunch, among the most successful over-achievers.
Here I am, 1.5 years into my start up / micro business that started with a dream, a vision, and a mission that goes almost counter main-stream, if you ask my friends for their honest opinion. And here I am, being loud about topics that make my mom feel “losing face”, advocating for causes that are banned in some states… all because I’m too stubborn to not see this through. Perseverance is my strength if I’m a superhero, I suppose.
Then I realized, I don’t have to feel like a hero to be a hero to someone - whether it’s my daughter, my family, my team, and my community. I am still me, too loud to conform, too passionate to wait for something to be done. Of course, my hero-ship is manifested and solidified because of my strong team at Duck Duck Books, but it’s nice to be reminded that I built my own team, with talents I hand selected, and my team is successful because of my leadership.
With that thought, I left my #impostersyndrome at stage left, confidently walked into the spotlight, stood next to the two incredible co-founders of Asian Hustle Network Maggie Chui Bryan Pham, and received the award from the industry legend from my multicultural advertising days Bill Imada (love how my worlds are colliding and merging). It felt great. And y’all just wait — this is only the beginning
